I recently had the pleasure of attending a Summer Shirt Making Workshop led by the wonderfully talented Justine Dumotier Khripounoff, and it was truly an experience to remember. Here’s a glimpse into the day:
✂️ A Warm Welcome & Getting Started
Justine greeted us warmly with her signature blend of enthusiasm and calm professionalism. She introduced the session with a short overview of her background then asked us to do the same. We then dived straight into showing everyone the fabric we had brought along with us —Justine kindly guided those of us that had brought along a couple of fabric options to make the final selection.
📐 The Pattern
Justine explained that she had created this pattern herself, simplifying a tailored shirt into something a beginner can achieve with some guidance. So for beginners like me, her demonstrations were clear and engaging. Soon, we were cutting front pieces and collars with growing confidence.
🧵 Sewing & Assembly
Next was assembling the shirt. Justine demonstrated techniques for neat pleats and seams, clean pointed collars and well-executed sleeves. We each tackled sewing sections of our shirts under her watchful eye. I learned to stay mindful of seam allowance and tension—two tiny details that can make or break the final look.
✨ Finishing Touches & Personal Flair
By the afternoon, most of us had our shirt bodies together. We moved on to finishing touches, like choosing buttons! 😍
Justine even encouraged creative variations—giving us a chance to infuse some personality into our designs.

One of the best parts was the relaxed, supportive atmosphere. Whether sharing tips or admiring each other’s work, there was a genuine sense of camaraderie. Justine’s gentle feedback and encouragement helped everyone feel accomplished—even those who hadn’t made many garments previously .

By the end of the workshop, each of us had a full understanding of making the summer shirt. Seeing our garments take form—from a handful of fabric pieces to wearable creations—was such a thrill. Justine took some photos, capturing us wearing our shirts and that special post-workshop glow. Satisfaction all round!
