Sewing is a Passion that nurtures creativity and mental well-being

Sewing: A Passion That Nurtures Creativity and Mental Well-being

By Kelly Lewis Butterfly Studio uk

There’s something truly magical about the rhythmic hum of a sewing machine, the feel of fabric under your fingertips, and the sense of satisfaction that comes from creating something with your own hands. For me, sewing has always been more than just a craft; it’s a way of connecting with my creativity, relieving stress, and fostering a sense of accomplishment. And I’m not alone. I’m passionate about sharing this craft with others, teaching them how to use a sewing machine, and showing how it can be a powerful tool for improving mental health.

The Joy of Making Something with Your Hands

In our fast-paced, tech-driven world, there’s something deeply grounding about working with your hands. Sewing, in particular, offers an opportunity to slow down and focus on a task that demands patience, precision, and attention to detail. Whether you’re stitching together a simple tote bag or tackling a more intricate project, every step in the process is a chance to engage your mind and hands in a way that is both creative and therapeutic.

The act of making something from scratch can also provide an immense sense of achievement. You start with raw materials – fabric, thread, and patterns – and, through time and effort, transform them into a beautiful, functional item. There’s no greater satisfaction than seeing the finished piece and realising that you’ve created it yourself.

Sewing as a Mental Health Tool

But it’s not just about the end result. The process of sewing can have profound effects on mental well-being. Studies have shown that engaging in creative activities like sewing can reduce stress, lower anxiety, and even improve cognitive function. This is partly because sewing requires you to be fully present in the moment – to focus on each stitch, each line of fabric, and each movement of the machine. This mindfulness helps to quiet the mind, which can be incredibly calming for those suffering from the pressures of daily life.

The repetitive motions involved in sewing also act as a form of meditation. Just as a runner experiences a “runner’s high,” the steady rhythm of sewing can trigger a similar release of endorphins, creating a feeling of relaxation and contentment. For many people, sewing becomes a form of therapy – a way to de-stress and escape from worries, even if only for a few hours.

Teaching the Craft: Empowering Others Through Sewing

One of the most rewarding aspects of my sewing journey is the opportunity to teach others. I find great joy in helping beginners unlock the potential of a sewing machine and guiding them through their first projects. It’s always wonderful to see someone’s eyes light up when they realise they can sew a straight seam or create something that is uniquely their own.

Teaching sewing goes beyond just imparting technical skills. It’s about empowering people to tap into their creativity, build confidence, and express themselves. Many of my students have come to realise that sewing isn’t just a hobby; it’s a skill that opens up a world of possibilities. From mending clothes to making personalised gifts, the potential is endless. And the best part is that anyone, regardless of age or experience, can learn how to sew.

For some, sewing can even become a way to reconnect with their heritage or cultural traditions. Whether it’s learning to sew a family heirloom or experimenting with fabrics that have personal significance, the act of creating something by hand can offer a sense of continuity and belonging.

The Social Aspect: Joining a Community of Makers

Sewing can also bring people together. I’ve seen firsthand how sewing classes and workshops can build a sense of community, where people share their skills, ideas, and experiences. It’s not just about making things – it’s about building relationships and forming bonds through a shared love of the craft.

For those who might feel isolated or disconnected, sewing offers an opportunity to connect with others in a meaningful way. Whether in a formal class or an informal gathering, the shared space of a sewing or craft group fosters a sense of support, encouragement, and camaraderie.

Conclusion: The Healing Power of Sewing

Sewing is more than just a creative outlet; it’s a tool for better mental health, a way to nurture your well-being, and an opportunity to develop new skills while connecting with others. The act of creating something by hand can provide a sense of purpose, reduce anxiety, and bring joy into your life. Whether you’re new to the craft or a seasoned sewer, there’s always something new to learn and explore in the world of sewing.

So, if you’re looking for a way to unwind, tap into your creativity, or learn something new, why not give sewing a try? You might just find, like I did, that the rhythmic hum of the sewing machine is the perfect soundtrack to a calmer, more centred you.

March news

Moving into March and spring is just around the corner!  The Frome Independant Market is back on Sunday 2nd March and we will be open 11-3pm.  We will also have our pattern swap box out for the weekend so pop in,  just put one in and take one out! We are getting new patterns in the box all the time. These can be vintage, part used, magazines, books and brand new patterns.

Workshops have been really busy for January and February and we have limited spaces on our March workshops.  April and May dates will be available soon. If you are waiting for a workshop to come up then please let us know and we can look at dates with tutors.

In March; –

Anna is back with her garment making classes:- The ‘Merchant and Mills garment in a day’ and the  6 week evening class.

Becki will be teaching ‘introduction to machine sewing’ for all the beginners out there,

and we have a NEW workshop  from Skye @slowstitchclub. A great new ‘next level’ Swiss darning workshop. For those that have done the ‘intro to darning’ and loved it, you maybe feel ready for the next challenge?

Finally, Justine is back with a NEW workshop – drafting a pattern for a blouse with sleeves.

And dont forget all our clubs, Sewcial and 1-1 sessions

NEW WORKSHOPS

Swiss Darning – Introduction to visible mending with Swiss darning with Skye:
slow stitch club teaches the art of visible mending using simple and traditional sewing
techniques to repair clothing in a creative, visible and intentional way.
In this 3 hour workshop we will look at how to use Swiss darning as a method of clothing
decoration and repair. Swiss darning can be used both to cover stains and repair holes in
knitted garments and we will cover the equipment you need to start swiss darning and also
look at tips and tricks to help along the way. I’ll run through Swiss darning techniques such
as the pin method and also talk about how to prepare your fabric for mending and weave in
the ends once you’ve finished. I will provide sample knit fabrics for us to work on, but please
feel free to bring along a knitted garment that you’d like to try repairing. Thick chunky knits
are best for this technique where you can clearly see the knit stitches. This workshop is
suitable for intermediate sewers and knitters and works well as a follow on from my original
introduction to darning workshop.

Draft a Blouse pattern, with Sleeves!

In this five weeks course, we are going to take the time to understands how to create a blouse pattern.

Starting with a bodice block and an example of a blouse you would like to make, you are going to learn how to move darts, add ease to a block, add yokes, pockets, frills or pleats, maybe a collar.

Together we will think about the length of your blouse, and the kind of opening you want. After a first draft and a first fitting in calico, we will proceed to the corrections of the blouse and start working on the sleeves.

After a sleeve check, you will be able to neaten your pattern pieces in order to have a paper pattern or toile pattern that you will be able to use and re-use for ever.

If you have attended my bodice block workshop, please bring your calico block.

To do this workshop you need to have good sewing skills and have already worked from a pattern before /or have some pattern cutting notions.

March madness

Finally, as we leap into March (happy birthday to all you leaplings!), the mornings are starting to get a little lighter and the evenings are getting a little longer. Spring is just around the corner… and then it snows! Yes, today in Somerset we have had a lovely sprinkling of snow. Hmm… what to wear, what to make?

But March it is, and with it brings the return of the Frome independent market, new workshops and new fabrics at Millie Moon.

Tomorrow is the first market of the year, and our pattern swap box will be back out.  For those who are unfamiliar with the swap, you can bring in any pattern you no longer use, didn’t like or never opened and swap it for one in the box.  If there is nothing you want this month we will give you a token to have a look another time.   All we ask is that all the pieces are still useable, the front is marked with the size cut and the instructions are included. Come along and have a rummage. We have a variety of small project patterns, vintage patterns, and dressmaking patterns.

New in for spring!

We have had lots of deliveries over the last few weeks. Here are a few of the new arrivals to tempt you back to sewing this spring. From lovely delicate Indian cottons, to soft cosy Dashwood needlecord, we have something for all weathers and all wardrobes. We have also had a restock of the Merchant and Mills patterns, including the new Ludlow, Sanda and Margo, (perfect for Annas’ next garment making workshop). Summer workshops at Millie Moon

Hi Hello to you all,

So it’s been a bit of a damp spring so far, so we have decided to look forward to all the bank holidays and hopefully some sunshine in May. However you are spending the extra holidays, we hope you have some fun! Sorry to all those of you that have to work. After many years in retail, we both know how hard it is working weekends and bank holidays when everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves. (But, don’t worry when they all go back to work, the sun will shine and it will be your day off!)

We have had the deliveries of all the lovely new fabrics we promised. The new rayons, dobby and chambrays are gorgeous for the summer season. We are now waiting for the fabulous Merchant and Mills linens to arrive back in stock. We’ve also had a lovely delivery of The Assembly Line Patterns and the latest edition of Tauko magazine has arrived. Perfect for that inspiration.
